Pyranine-70% is a reactive dye that is used in the manufacture of detergent compositions. It is stable to light and heat, which makes it useful as a fluorescence probe and optical sensor. Pyranine-70% has been shown to react with human serum proteins, such as fatty acids, which causes changes in its fluorescence properties. This dye can be used as a photochemical sensor for proton concentrations and water vapor. Pyranine-70% also has been shown to inhibit axonal growth and metabolic disorders in fetal bovine retinas, which are caused by fatty acid oxidation products.
