1,3-Pentadiene is a nonpolar organic compound that is used for the production of polymers. It is produced by cationic polymerization, which involves the use of a cationic catalyst and nonpolar solvents. The reaction mechanism begins with ethylene diamine, which reacts with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid to form an ion pair. This ion pair then reacts with tetronic acid to form a pentadienyl cation and tetraethylammonium chloride. That cation then reacts with para-substituted aromatic rings to produce 1,3-pentadiene. 1,3-Pentadiene has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in mice models due to its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity.
