Polystyrene is a polymer made from the monomer styrene. It is used in food packaging and containers for heat-sensitive foods, such as microwavable dinners. Polystyrene can be either clear or opaque, depending on the manufacturing process used. Styrene is chemically stable and has a high melting point of about 170°C (338°F). Polystyrene is not metabolized by mammals, but it may be metabolized by bacteria in the environment. Chronic exposure to polystyrene particles may lead to an increased risk of developing cancer because styrene is classified as a human carcinogen. The basic structure of polystyrene consists of long chains that are linked together by covalent bonds. The material's water permeability allows it to absorb moisture from its surroundings, which increases its weight and volume. This can lead to cracking or breakage of polystyrene products due to hydrolysis reactions with water molecules that cause the material to lose structural rigidity over time. Skin
