Description

(1R)-(+)-alpha-Pinene is an alkene that is produced by plants and other organisms. It is used as a building block in the biosynthesis of many other natural products, including camphor, pine oil, and several terpenoids. This compound has been shown to have a chiral center at carbon number one. The reaction requires oxygenated conditions and is catalyzed by a biocatalyst. The product obtained from this reaction is highlighted in the experiment, which also demonstrates control experiments. (1R)-(+)-alpha-Pinene has been shown to be an insect pheromone and may be used as a catalyst to produce geranyl acetate from geraniol.
