Pyropheophorbide-a is a photosensitizer that has been shown to induce apoptosis in human osteosarcoma cells and cancer cells. It is also used for the treatment of subcutaneous tumors. Pyropheophorbide-a exhibits photophysical properties and can be activated by light with a wavelength of 630 nm. It has been shown to react with chlorophyll a and other photosensitizers, such as hematoporphyrin derivative, to form reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause cell death. ROS are generated when the combination of pyropheophorbide-a and hematoporphyrin derivative are excited by light of an appropriate wavelength. ROS react with cellular components such as proteins, DNA, or lipids, causing oxidative damage which may lead to cell death through apoptosis or necrosis.
