Poloxamer 182 is a non-ionic surfactant that contains dodecyl groups. It has been shown to be an antimicrobial agent and a glycol ether. The anti-bacterial activity of poloxamer 182 is attributed to the benzalkonium chloride, which binds to the bacterial cell membrane and causes depolarization. Poloxamer 182 also has p-gp inhibitory properties, as it competes with substrates for this transporter protein. It has been shown to be used in pharmaceutical drugs and cardiotonic agents. This drug also inhibits cancer cell viability when it interacts with phospholipids on their surface, making them more susceptible to lysis by other cells. Poloxamer 182 has been used as a particle in analytical methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, where it acts as a chemical stabilizer.
