P-tolylphosphonic acid is a phosphonate that has atypical properties and is used in solar cells. It is a chiral, mononuclear, inorganic compound with the chemical formula of HPO(CH3)2PO. P-tolylphosphonic acid has been shown to be an efficient electron donor for perovskite solar cells. This chemical can be used as a self-assembled monolayer on electrode surfaces to increase the performance of these devices by reducing surface recombination and increasing charge carrier mobility. P-tolylphosphonic acid binds to bacterial proteins and inhibits their activity, preventing them from synthesizing proteins needed for cell division. The active site of p-tolylphosphonic acid is also an anion, which may have contributed to its inhibition of phosphatase activity.
