3,6,9,12,15-Pentaoxaheptadecane-1,17-diyl bis-amine is an ionophore that has a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic shell. This molecule has been shown to be effective in transporting ions across bilayers and membranes. The methylene groups are analogous to the methylene groups found in the amino acid methionine. 3,6,9,12,15-Pentaoxaheptadecane-1,17-diyl bis-amine forms a 1:1 complex with cations such as K+, Na+, Li+ and H+, which are transported through the membrane. The hydrophobic core of this molecule prevents the formation of water bridges between the hydrophilic parts of the molecule and the lipid bilayer.
