3-Phenylpropionitrile is a compound with biological properties, which is used as an inhibitor of enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of some key enzymes in the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pathway, such as cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipoxygenase. 3-Phenylpropionitrile also inhibits hydroxylation reactions by acting as a competitive inhibitor for cytochrome P450. This chemical has been shown to be highly resistant to microbial metabolism and is mainly metabolized into 3-phenylpropanal in humans. 3-Phenylpropionitrile can be prepared through a solid phase microextraction procedure that involves sample preparation and reaction solution. The reaction solution is then heated under reflux conditions until the solvent evaporates and the desired product precipitates out of solution.
