Prallethrin is a naturally occurring fatty acid that has been shown to have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Prallethrin is synthesized from the precursor compound, linoleic acid, by enzymatic action. Prallethrin can be used as a treatment for microbial infections. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth through its inhibition of fatty acid synthesis and cellular respiration. Prallethrin is also active against high levels of resistance in some bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This drug has been shown to react with toll-like receptors by stimulating the innate immune system, which may explain its anti-inflammatory effects.
