Rac-1-palmitoyl-3-chloropropanediol is a fatty acid ester that is a potent apoptotic agent that can be used to induce cell apoptosis. It inhibits the kinase activity of sp600125 and induces the expression of proteins that are involved in apoptosis signaling pathways, including the protein which regulates mitochondrial membrane permeability. Rac 1-Palmitoyl-3-chloropropanediol has been shown to induce apoptosis in a number of cell types, including neurons, glial cells, and lymphocytes. This compound has been shown to inhibit microglia activation and reduce inflammatory responses in rats. Rac 1-Palmitoyl-3-chloropropanediol is also an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase, blocking the synthesis of fatty acids from acetyl coenzyme A and malonyl coenzyme A. The molecule protects against oxidative stress by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and inhibiting nitric oxide production.
