Pegfilgrastim is a pefloxacin prodrug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of neutropenia. Pegfilgrastim binds to growth factor-β1 and has been shown to stimulate cell proliferation and inhibit cell death. It also inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Pegfilgrastim has been shown to bind to the microdialysis probes in rat skin, which may be due to its high affinity for protein. The analytical method used was chromatographic analysis with an HPLC/UV detector. This drug also showed activity against gram-positive species, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.
