4-Propoxylmandelic acid is a chemical intermediate that can be used in the synthesis of mandelic acid. It is synthesised from benzene, phenyltartronic acid and phosphoric acid in a condensation reaction. The colourless liquid has been used as an intermediate for the production of other compounds, including dyestuffs and pharmaceuticals. Researchers have also used it to produce pigments. The time required for complete conversion of 4-propoxy mandelic acid to mandelic acid ranges from 5 minutes to 7 days at room temperature.
