Phosphorus oxybromide is a compound of phosphorus, oxygen and bromine that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is soluble in water and reacts with the sodium salt of nitric acid to form the sodium salt of phosphoric acid. The phase transition temperature for phosphorus oxybromide is -51.5°C. This compound has been shown to have activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but not fungi or protozoa. Phosphorus oxybromide also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their DNA, preventing bacterial replication and transcription. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the formation of a reactive intermediate which reacts with DNA to form a covalent bond with phosphorus in DNA bases. Phosphorus oxybromide can be synthesized from anhydrous sodium phosphate (NaPO3) and hydrogen fluoride (HF). Phosphorus oxybromide is also known as phosphoryl bromide
