Description

4-Pyridinemethanol is a colorless, oily liquid that has a strong pungent odor. It is soluble in water and reacts with acids to form an acidic solution. 4-Pyridinemethanol has been used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, such as anti-viral agents, and as a control agent for chemical reactions. This compound is also used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and to synthesize other compounds. 4-Pyridinemethanol can react with nucleophilic agents, such as chloride ions, which are found in human serum. The reaction mechanism involves the nucleophilic attack of the chloride ion on the carbonyl group of 4-pyridinemethanol to produce a new molecule called 4-(chloromethyl)pyridine.
