2-Propanethiol is an activated form of the molecule with a low potency. It is used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the synthesis of organic compounds, such as bicyclic heterocycles. 2-Propanethiol has been shown to react with copper chloride and sodium carbonate to produce a reactive oxygen species, which then reacts with hydroxyl groups on cyclohexene to produce a trifluoroacetate ester. The presence of this ester can be detected by infrared spectroscopy.
