3-Pyridylacetic acid is a carboxylic acid that belongs to the class of picolinic acids. The compound is prepared by reacting picolinic acid with hydroxide solution in hydrochloric acid. 3-Pyridylacetic acid can be used as a chemical ionization reagent for sample preparation and as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. It also has been shown to react with carbonyl groups, phosphorus pentoxide, and excretory organs. 3-Pyridylacetic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide solution in analytical methods to produce carboxylic acids.
