Mefloquine is a drug that belongs to the class of pharmacological agents. It is used in the treatment of malaria caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Mefloquine is a metal chelate that inhibits the activity of p-glycoprotein, a membrane protein which controls the transport or efflux of many drugs from cells. This inhibition leads to an increase in the concentration of mefloquine inside bacteria and parasites, increasing its effectiveness at inhibiting their growth. Mefloquine has been shown to be effective in treating infectious diseases such as bowel disease and malaria caused by protozoa.
Mefloquine can cause toxic epidermal necrolysis, a condition where large areas of skin slough off and die if taken with certain other drugs (such as phenytoin).
