Pigment Red 123 is a red organic pigment with the chemical formula C. It is soluble in water and glycol ethers, but insoluble in oils. Pigments of this type are used as dyes for textiles, plastics and other materials. Pigment Red 123 has been shown to be an effective radiation absorber and can be used to protect against gamma radiation. It absorbs radiation by forming a chelate ligand with the metal ion that is responsible for the radiation damage. The absorption of light energy by this ligand leads to the production of heat which dissipates the damaging effects of radiation on cells and tissues.
