Description

Periglaucine A is a natural product that has shown anticancer properties. It inhibits the growth of trophozoites, prevents granuloma formation, and inhibits viral replication in vitro. Periglaucine A may be able to block the entry of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) into red blood cells by encapsulating them with phospholipids. This compound also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, as it has been shown to inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β in vitro. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to the denaturation of proteins and inhibition of DNA synthesis.

It is an antituberculosis drug that belongs to the class of rifamycins. It is the most active of the rifamycins for the treatment of tuberculosis.
