Description

(3S,4S)-pyrrolidine-3,4-diol is a biochemical that has been shown to increase the brittleness of epoxy resins. This compound is also an effective hardener for epoxidized polymers and can be used in the production of fibre and plastics. It is synthesized from arabinitol, which is a sugar alcohol that is found in plants. The target enzyme for (3S,4S)-pyrrolidine-3,4-diol is hydroxymethyl transferase. This compound has also been shown to have antioxidant properties as well as electron donating properties due to its hydroxymethyl group. (3S,4S)-pyrrolidine-3,4-diol also has a high ph optimum of around 9 and reacts with electron at this pH. It reacts with oxygen to produce epoxides when it reaches its boiling point.
