Phenylthiomethyltrimethylsilane is a reactive, halide. It is activated with aldehydes to form epoxides and reacts with sulfoxides to form sulfones. Phenylthiomethyltrimethylsilane reacts with anions to form salts, such as copper(II)sulfate. This compound does not react with unreactive compounds, such as phenols or amines. The redox potential for this compound is +0.3 volts and it undergoes disulfide exchange reactions in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. The nucleophilic nature of Phenylthiomethyltrimethylsilane enables it to act as an alkylating agent on thiol-containing molecules and other nucleophiles.
