9-Phenylacridine is an insoluble polymer that is used in modelling studies. It has been shown to have a matrix effect on the hamster V79 cells, which may be due to its ability to reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential. 9-Phenylacridine also has anti-tumour activity against V79 cells and radiation. The apoptotic effect of 9-phenylacridine is mediated by electron reduction, leading to the activation of caspases and DNA fragmentation. Hydrochloric acid can be used to cleave the polymer into smaller monomers for analysis.
