Description

(+/-)-Pinoresinol is a plant metabolite that has been shown to have hypoglycemic activity. It is an enantiomer of the more common (-)-pinoresinol, which is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of the phytoestrogen resveratrol. (+/-)-Pinoresinol inhibits glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphoglucomutase, two enzymes involved in the production of glucose from other metabolites. This metabolite also stimulates insulin secretion through its effects on pancreatic β-cells.
