Description

2-(Pentafluorophenyl)ethanol is a fluorinated alcohol that can be used in the synthesis of other chemicals. The conformation of this molecule has been determined by its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the triarylbismuth-fluoride ion. 2-(Pentafluorophenyl)ethanol has a similar structure to phenol and pentafluorobenzene, but with an extra fluorine atom on the ring. This hydrocarbon group is inexpensively synthesized from ethylene and pentafluorobenzene, which are both readily available. 2-(Pentafluorophenyl)ethanol may be used as medicine for treatment of optical nerve diseases such as glaucoma or retinal detachment. A single-crystal x-ray diffraction study was performed to determine the molecular structure of this compound.
