Description

(2E)-3-Quinolin-2-ylacrylic acid is a functional group that contains an elimination rate of 4.5% at pH 8 and has anti-leishmanial activity. It has been shown to be effective against visceral leishmaniasis, which is characterized by the invasion of parasites into the internal organs, and cutaneous leishmaniasis, which is characterized by the invasion of parasites into skin cells. This compound also inhibits farnesyltransferase, which prevents the production of ergosterol in Leishmania spp. (the causative agent of leishmaniasis). The compound binds to active site residues on farnesyltransferase and inhibits its function. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex with geranylgeraniol that is required for the biosynthesis of ergosterol and leads to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
