Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is used to treat depression. Escitalopram is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers: the levorotary (S) and dextrorotary (R) enantiomers. The S-enantiomer is more potent than the R-enantiomer. Escitalopram crystallizes from organic solvents as an oxalate salt, which can be purified by recrystallization from ethanol and oxalic acid. Escitalopram can also crystallize from water as the catechol form or from chloroform as the benzophenone derivative. Escitalopram is an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs, such as citalopram, which are used for the treatment of depression.
