Rosaprostol is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1. It is used for the treatment of symptoms related to uterine contractions during labor, such as pain and bleeding. Rosaprostol can also be used for short-term treatment in the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage, but its long-term efficacy is questionable. The drug binds to prostaglandin receptors on the uterus and stimulates contraction, thereby reducing uterine blood loss. Rosaprostol has been shown to have a significant effect on fatty acid metabolism in experimental models. Fatty acids are broken down by hydrochloric acid and water vapor into glycerol and fatty acids, which are then converted into acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl CoA) by the enzyme acyl CoA synthetase.
