R-Styrene oxide is an enantiopure chiral compound that is active as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme polyamine oxidase. It binds to the active site of polyamine oxidase and inhibits its activity. R-Styrene oxide has been shown to have no inhibitory effect on acid formation in the stomach and intestine, which may be due to its lack of inhibition of pepsin or other gastric hydrolytic enzymes. This drug also has a dry weight-increasing effect on CD-1 mice, which may be due to an increased uptake of dietary protein by these animals.
