Scopoletin is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cells in vitro. It has also been shown to cause cell lysis when combined with human serum. Scopoletin is a member of the flavonoid class and is found in many species of plants. The biological properties of scopoletin are not well understood, but it has been shown to have conformational and fluorescence properties. Scopoletin has been used as a fluorescent probe for DNA binding and as a synchronous fluorescence model system. The apoptosis pathway involves mitochondrial membrane depolarization and activation of caspases, which are enzymes that cleave cellular proteins.
