Sulfamonomethoxinesodium is a sulfonamide antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. It is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of folic acid and prevents the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid. The drug binds to p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is a precursor for folic acid. Sulfamonomethoxinesodium also has neurotrophic effects, which are mediated by its antioxidant properties. This drug has been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii. Sulfamonomethoxinesodium is not active against mycobacteria or fungi, which may be due to its poor penetration into cells.
