Sodium thiocyanate is a sodium salt that is soluble in water. It is used as an analytical reagent and as a chemical inhibitor. When combined with copper chloride, it forms the crystalline compound copper(II) thiocyanate, which has an x-ray crystal structure. Sodium thiocyanate can be produced by heating anhydrous sodium carbonate with potassium cyanide to produce the monosodium salt of thiocyanic acid, which reacts with excess sodium chloride to form the disodium salt of thiocyanic acid. It can also be made by adding sulfur dioxide or hydrochloric acid to a solution of sodium nitrate and then adding potassium ferrocyanide. Injection solutions containing sodium thiocyanate are useful for the analysis of protein content in cells and tissues.
