Scopolamine is a cholinergic drug that is used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting. It has been shown to inhibit voltage-dependent calcium channels, which are proteins that regulate the movement of calcium ions through cell membranes. Scopolamine has also been shown to reduce drooling and suppress cholinergic activity in the brain, which can lead to muscle paralysis. Scopolamine has no significant interactions with other drugs, but may have neurotrophic effects on the brain. This drug has been shown to induce epoxidase activity in some natural compounds, such as estradiol benzoate. The basic chemical structure for scopolamine is 1-[2-(methylamino)ethyl]benzeneethanamine hydrochloride or (-)-hyoscine hydrobromide. Scopolamine's most notable effect is its ability to suppress locomotor activity during experiments involving rats and mice.
