Sodium acetate-13C2 is a plant metabolite that is produced by the metabolism of acetate. It has been postulated to be involved in plant defense against pathogens and pests. The 13C label was used to track the metabolite through various metabolic pathways, including phytoalexins, detoxification, and degradation. The unlabelled form of the molecule was used for chromatographic techniques to detect its presence in plants. The high values obtained from these methods were quantified and compared with known concentrations of phytuberin, a phytoalexin found in tobacco plants. The results suggest that this metabolite may play a role in plant pathogen resistance.
