Spinosyn A is a natural compound that has been isolated from the soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It has insecticidal activity against Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, including resistant strains. Spinosyn A is a model system for analyzing the mechanism of action of insecticides and has been used to study the toxicity of organic compounds, including those with unknown structures. Spinosyn A has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in mice and rats. Spinosyn A binds to neurotransmitter receptors in insects, leading to the inhibition of acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and possibly other enzymes. The binding of Spinosyn A to these receptors leads to depression of neural activity in insects, which eventually leads to death by respiratory failure or paralysis. This binding also causes an increase in detoxification enzymes such as glutathione S-transferases (GST) in insects.
