Sodium dodecylsulfate is a surfactant that is used as a detergent and in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties against enzymes such as dextran sulfate, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of dextran sulfate to dextran. Sodium dodecylsulfate can also be used as an experimental model for the study of infectious diseases. Sodium dodecylsulfate has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reactions by fluorescence probe and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, suggesting that it may be useful for prevention of viral infections.
