It is a colorless crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and serves as a source of both silicon dioxide (SiO2) and sodium ions. Sodium metasilicate can be used to manufacture other products, such as soaps, detergents, and textiles. Sodium metasilicate reacts with fatty acids to form soap and it can also be used to produce metal hydroxides, such as sodium carbonate, from metal oxides. This compound has been found to have the ability to increase the stability of certain materials by increasing their porosity through a process called activation. Activated materials are often used in the production of foams or plastics.
