(S)-3-Hydroxybutyric acid sodium is an organic compound that belongs to the group of beta-hydroxy acids. It is used as a carbon source in microbiological media. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of faecalis and Digitorum, which are bacterial species found in the human gut. 3-Hydroxybutyric acid sodium has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on bacterial cells that are grown in culture supernatant. This effect is due to its ability to bind extracellularly to glut4 proteins and act as a competitive substrate for receptor substrate-1, which are enzymes involved in glucose uptake. (S)-3-Hydroxybutyric acid sodium is also used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of dodecylbenzene derivatives.
