Sodium 2-hydroxybutyrate is a drug that has been used to treat bowel disease. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme activity in the pentobarbital sodium degradation pathway. The chemical stability of this compound has been shown in a polymerase chain reaction study, which was conducted in human serum. The pharmacokinetics of this drug have also been studied in humans, where it was found to be metabolized by hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and hydroxylation to produce 2-hydroxybutanal. This compound has shown anti-inflammatory properties in inflammatory bowel disease and protective effects against cardiac injury. Sodium 2-hydroxybutyrate is principally excreted as conjugates in humans and does not show any signs of toxicity at high doses.
