Sciadopitysin is a natural compound extracted from the plant Sciadopitys verticillata. It has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo. Sciadopitysin inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are responsible for metabolizing xenobiotics, including drugs. In rat liver microsomes, sciadopitysin competitively inhibited the enzyme p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PHAH), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of p-hydroxybenzoic acid to hydroxybenzoate. This inhibition results in increased levels of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which may be responsible for sciadopitysin’s hepatotoxicity. Sciadopitysin also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and lysosomal function without affecting ATP levels.
