The mechanism of action of sodium pyrithione is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to act as an intracellular calcium ion channel blocker, thereby preventing bacterial growth. Sodium pyrithione also inhibits ATP levels by binding to the n-oxide group at the active site of ATP synthase. This prevents ATP production and leads to cell death.
