3-Thiophenecarboxylic acid is an alkanoic acid that has been shown to have the ability to inhibit skin cancer and lipid biosynthesis. 3-Thiophenecarboxylic acid reacts with a hydroxyl group to form a carboxylate, which is a functional group of esters and amides. The carboxylate group can undergo intermolecular hydrogen bonding with other molecules. 3-Thiophenecarboxylic acid also reacts with a molecule containing an oxygen atom to form an ether linkage, which is responsible for the structural properties of polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene.
