Terephthalohydrazide is a monomeric aromatic hydrocarbon that polymerizes to form polymers. It can be used as an adsorption agent and a cross-linking agent. Terephthalohydrazide has been shown to have chemical stability in the presence of hydrochloric acid, which is necessary for its use in the production of polyurethanes. Terephthalohydrazide has been shown to be an excellent proton donor, with a pKa of 8.4, which makes it capable of undergoing nucleophilic substitution reactions. FT-IR spectroscopy has revealed that terephthalohydrazide emits light when irradiated with UV light or excited by an electron beam. Carbonyl groups on the aromatic ring are responsible for this fluorescence emission.
