Hydrogen chloride and chloride are used as hydrogen donors and acceptors respectively during this process. 4,4,5,5-Tetrachloro-1,3-dioxolan-2-one also reacts with oxalyl in the presence of base to form 4-(4',4'''-dimethoxytrityl)benzoic acid.
