The chemical ionization mass spectrometry of primary alcohols, such as (6E,10E)-7,11,15-trimethyl-3-methylene-1,6,10,14-hexadecatetrene (TMT) and its isomers, has been investigated. TMT is a volatile compound which is emitted by plants in response to herbivore attack or some other stress. The emission of TMT from plants of the genus Carolinense was studied under different photoperiods. It was found that there were significant differences in the emissions between short daylengths and long daylengths.
The analysis of TMT and its isomers has been performed with the help of gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detection (GC/ECD). The results showed that TMT consists mainly of octadecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid and hexadecanoic acid. Analysis also showed that geranylgeranyl acetate consists mainly of
