Tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylic acid (THPC) is a potent anti-cancer agent that has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. THPC is metabolized by conjugation with hydrogen sulfate, which is excreted in the urine. In vitro experiments have shown that THPC has a regulatory effect on the production of breviscapine, an alkaloid found in Chinese herb "Corydalis". This drug has also been shown to enhance the rate of tumor xenografts in animals and induce apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells. The mechanism of action for THPC involves activation of the mitochondrial pathway by increasing electron flow and reactive oxygen species production. This leads to enhanced rates of DNA damage and apoptosis induction.
