Description

N,N,N',N'-Tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine is a compound that has been used in the past as a chelating agent for removing heavy metals and radionuclides from water. It is also used as a scavenger of hydroxyl ions, which are responsible for the degradation of proteins and other biomolecules. The receptor binding sites of basic proteins have been shown to be susceptible to N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine. The chemical stability of this molecule has been demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy, kinetic studies and tryptophan fluorescence quenching in vivo.
