4-Tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-2,6-xylylacetonitrile is a fatty acid that is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. It has an occlusive profile and can be reconstituted with water. The molecule has been shown to have antimicrobial properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria by preventing the synthesis of fatty acids required for bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. 4-Tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-2,6-xylylacetonitrile also exhibits antisolvent properties, which are attributed to its ability to dissolve other substances in a solvent by lowering their solubility.
