Dehydrocostus lactone is a triterpenoid compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities. It is also an inhibitor of the enzyme complex dehydroprostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase and thus blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins. Dehydrocostus lactone has been shown to be effective against water vapor in the bowel, and has been used as an analytical method for determining its concentration in aqueous solutions. This compound has been found to have antiviral properties against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and 2 (HIV-2). The therapeutic efficacy of this drug may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes. Angelica Dahurica extract, Cimicifuga foetida extract, and Hinesol have all demonstrated synergistic effects with dehydrocostus lactone.
