Description

Trimethylamine is an organic molecule that belongs to the family of amines. It is a colorless gas with a characteristic odor. Trimethylamine can be produced by bacterial action on nitrogen-containing compounds in wastewater, and has been proposed as an early indicator of microbial contamination in water systems. The biochemical properties of trimethylamine are similar to those of trimethylaminuria, which is a genetic disorder characterized by the production of excessive amounts of trimethylamine from dietary sources. Trimethylamine reacts with nitrite ion to form the trimethylammonium ion (TMA+), which reacts with oxygen to form nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide (NO) is then converted into nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O). The reaction mechanism for these reactions has been studied using various effector proteins and biological samples such as human serum albumin, blood plasma, and urine.
